Blue Moon Alpacas
About Blue Moon Alpacas
Blue Moon Alpacas was born in early 2002 when we purchased our first alpaca, a female who was heavily pregnant, our first born was a little girl. Later that year we bought two more alpacas, both pregnant and both came with a cria at foot. By the end of 2002 we had a small herd of 8 alpacas.
Over the following years with our breeding program we built our herd up to over 40 animals.
Shearing takes place once a year, usually early October to avoid the onset of grass seeds as we move further into spring. After a couple of years collecting fleeces, we had them spun commercially and proceeded to utilise the yarn. My mother in law began knitting beanies, while with the help of a friend was able to source a floor loom, she also taught me how to weave, Glenda took workshops in felting and together we were able to open up our farm shop and studio.
Alpacas come in 22 different shades of colour, starting with the whites and creams, and move into the fawns and the various shades of brown, my favourites are the greys, from silver, light, medium, dark, gunbarrell and charcoal. Then of course there is the blacks, “ spectacular “.
A combination of these colours blend together to produce wonderful natural looking scarves and shawls. Alpaca is a hollow fibre, so very light and comfortable to wear, with the added advantage of trapping your body heat to keep you snug and warm during those cooler months.
When visiting Blue Moon Alpacas you have the option of one of our tours, where you go and meet the alpacas, take some photos and we have a chat, which generally takes 15 minutes, full of all the information on why the alpaca is such a unique animal. The tour costs $5 (a car load).
You may also like to visit our studio where I have my working looms set up and see the process to which the scarves and shawls are made or browse through our range of on farm, hand-made scarves and shawls.
As you wander back after visiting the alpacas you will pass through our organic market gardens, where we grow seasonal vegetables which we sell to local businesses in Pomonal and Hall Gap, and on farm when we have excess. We can offer an extensive garden tour by appointment, as we move through our vegetable patch, I explain the organic principles we use, how we have grown our soil from compost, seed collection for stronger and healthier plants adapted to the harsh conditions, companion planting, the importance of seasonal growing and pest control.
This tour will cost $20.00 and take around an hour.
